They admit an intuitive probabilistic interpretation, have a simple functional form, and enjoy widespread adoption. We introduce a unified algorithm to efficiently learn a broad class of linear and non-linear state space models, including variants where the emission and transition distributions are modeled by deep neural networks. Our learning algorithm simultaneously learns a compiled inference network and the generative model, leveraging a structured variational approximation parameterized by recurrent neural networks to mimic the posterior distribution. We apply the learning algorithm to both synthetic and real-world datasets, demonstrating its scalability and versatility. We find that using the structured approximation to the posterior results in models with significantly higher held-out likelihood.}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the thirty-first {AAAI} conference on artificial intelligence}, publisher = {AAAI Press}, author = {Krishnan, Rahul G. and Shalit, Uri and Sontag, David}, year = {2017}, note = {Place: San Francisco, California, USA Number of pages: 9}, keywords = {\#nosource, ⛔ No DOI found}, pages = {2101--2109}, }

Inputs modified in this way can be mislabeled as a target class in targeted attacks or as a random class different from the ground truth in untargeted attacks. However, recent studies have demonstrated that such adversarial examples have limited effectiveness in the physical world due to changing physical conditions--they either completely fail to cause misclassification or only work in restricted cases where a relatively complex image is perturbed and printed on paper. In this paper, we propose a general attack algorithm--Robust Physical Perturbations (RP2)-- that takes into account the numerous physical conditions and produces robust adversarial perturbations. Using a real-world example of road sign recognition, we show that adversarial examples generated using RP2 achieve high attack success rates in the physical world under a variety of conditions, including different viewpoints. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, there is currently no standardized way to evaluate physical adversarial perturbations. Therefore, we propose a two-stage evaluation methodology and tailor it to the road sign recognition use case. Our methodology captures a range of diverse physical conditions, including those encountered when images are captured from moving vehicles. We evaluate our physical attacks using this methodology and effectively fool two road sign classifiers. Using a perturbation in the shape of black and white stickers, we attack a real Stop sign, causing targeted misclassification in 100\% of the images obtained in controlled lab settings and above 84\% of the captured video frames obtained on a moving vehicle for one of the classifiers we attack.}, journal = {arXiv:1707.08945 [cs]}, author = {Evtimov, Ivan and Eykholt, Kevin and Fernandes, Earlence and Kohno, Tadayoshi and Li, Bo and Prakash, Atul and Rahmati, Amir and Song, Dawn}, month = jul, year = {2017}, note = {arXiv: 1707.08945}, keywords = {⛔ No DOI found} }

@article{zhang_understanding_2016, title = {Understanding {Deep} {Learning} {Requires} {Rethinking} {Generalization}}, abstract = {Despite their massive size, successful deep artificial neural networks can exhibit a remarkably small difference between training and test performance. Conventional wisdom attributes small generalization error either to properties of the model family, or to the regularization techniques used during training. Through extensive systematic experiments, we show how these traditional approaches fail to explain why large neural networks generalize well in practice. Specifically, our experiments establish that state-of-the-art convolutional networks for image classification trained with stochastic gradient methods easily fit a random labeling of the training data. This phenomenon is qualitatively unaffected by explicit regularization, and occurs even if we replace the true images by completely unstructured random noise. We corroborate these experimental findings with a theoretical construction showing that simple depth two neural networks already have perfect finite sample expressivity as soon as the number of parameters exceeds the number of data points as it usually does in practice. By reparameterizing the weights in this way we improve the conditioning of the optimization problem and we speed up convergence of stochastic gradient descent. Our reparameterization is inspired by batch normalization but does not introduce any dependencies between the examples in a minibatch. This means that our method can also be applied successfully to recurrent models such as LSTMs and to noise-sensitive applications such as deep reinforcement learning or generative models, for which batch normalization is less well suited. Although our method is much simpler, it still provides much of the speed-up of full batch normalization. In this paper, we present a generic framework to extend such existing algorithms to solve more general nonlinear, possibly nonconvex, optimization problems. The basic idea is to incorporate a local search step (gradient descent or Quasi-Newton iteration) into the uniformly optimal convex programming methods, and then enforce a monotone decreasing property of the function values computed along the trajectory. While optimal methods for nonconvex programming are not generally known, algorithms of these types will achieve the best known complexity for nonconvex problems, and the optimal complexity for convex ones without requiring any problem parameters. As a consequence, we can have a unified treatment for a general class of nonlinear programming problems regardless of their convexity and smoothness level. In particular, we show that the accelerated gradient and level methods, both originally designed for solving convex optimization problems only, can be used for solving both convex and nonconvex problems uniformly. In a similar vein, we show that some well-studied techniques for nonlinear programming, e.g., Quasi-Newton iteration, can be embedded into optimal convex optimization algorithms to possibly further enhance their numerical performance. Within some public sectors, as for example those ones concerned with basic healthcare, interoperability is a real requirement. This article is an initiative for discussing the issue of interoperability in the scope of Information Science. Particularly, we intend to clarify the role of ontologies in this context, insofar as ontologies have been proposed as an alternative to provide interoperability. In order to reach our goals, we briefly define interoperability, present the initiatives of the Brazilian government in this sense, and then try to elucidate how to apply ontologies as a tool to provide interoperability. In contrast to previous approaches that equip UML with a formal semantics, we follow an institution based heterogeneous approach. This can express suitable formal semantics of the different UML diagram types directly, without the need to map everything to one specific formalism (let it be first-order logic or graph grammars). We show how different aspects of the formal development process can be coherently formalised, ranging from requirements over design and Hoare-style conditions on code to the implementation itself. The framework can be used to verify consistency of different UML diagrams both horizontally (e.g., consistency among various requirements) as well as vertically (e.g., correctness of design or implementation w.r.t. the requirements).}, urldate = {2021-01-27}, journal = {arXiv:1403.7747 [cs]}, author = {Knapp, Alexander and Mossakowski, Till and Roggenbach, Markus}, month = mar, year = {2014}, keywords = {Computer Science - Logic in Computer Science, Computer Science - Software Engineering, ⛔ No DOI found}, }

Recently, the semantic web initiatives reinforce this trend, with the exponential growth of publication of linked data, which relies heavily on the use of vocabularies from different sources and topics. In this scenario, where the dynamics or urgency of creating these vocabularies often supplants the adoption of systematic practices for their organization, we observed little support to explicit the principles that guide their construction. Especially considering the need to articulate these vocabularies, independently constructed and often maintained decentralized, the identification of the nature of the concepts involved is a key element to avoid ambiguities when making correspondences between them. The aim of this work is to help disseminate and explain the importance of ontological assumptions in the use of ontologies in the context of semantic web, and to discuss differences to assumptions commonly adopted by the information scientist in the scope of bibliographical classification. The result is a proposed set of basic ontological assumptions, to be adopted by an information scientist as a starting point to organize ontologies. Ontologies are usually associated with technology, but an approach named Applied Ontology has been receiving more and more attention. This approach focuses on philosophical aspects of ontologies, rather than on computational aspects, in order to propose methods for knowledge organization. This paper is based on proposals of Applied Ontology and aims to contribute to the advancement of discussions about the usefulness of ontologies in the scope of Knowledge Organization. In order to reach our goals, we first characterize ontologies according to their level of generality; then we discuss their connections to seminal concepts of Information Science. We conclude that, in the scope of the studies on ontologies, it is possible to characterize such seminal concepts and even define them in a complementary way. As our final contribution, we propose a level-oriented view of reality that helps one in the understanding of relations among the different notions mentioned throughout this paper, which belong to different fields of research. Portanto, é discutida a aplicabilidade desses elementos em repositórios digitais.}, number = {2}, journal = {Biblos}, author = {Ribeiro, Odília B. and Vidotti, Silvana A.}, year = {2009}, note = {00000}, keywords = {Arquitetura, da, informação, ⛔ No DOI found, 🔍No DOI found}, pages = {105--116}, }
@article{clauset_power-law_2009, title = {Power-law distributions in empirical data}, abstract = {Power-law distributions occur in many situations of scientific interest and have significant consequences for our understanding of natural and man-made phenomena. Unfortunately, the detection and characterization of power laws is complicated by the large fluctuations that occur in the tail of the distribution—the part of the distribution representing large but rare events— and by the difficulty of identifying the range over which power-law behavior holds. Commonly used methods for analyzing power-law data, such as least-squares fitting, can produce substantially inaccurate estimates of parameters for power-law distributions, and even in cases where such methods return accurate answers they are still unsatisfactory because they give no indication of whether the data obey a power law at all. Here we present a principled statistical framework for discerning and quantifying power-law behavior in empirical data. Our approach combines maximum-likelihood fitting methods with goodness-of-fit tests based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic and likelihood ratios. We evaluate the effectiveness of the approach with tests on synthetic data and give critical comparisons to previous approaches. We also apply the proposed methods to twenty-four real-world data sets from a range of different disciplines, each of which has been conjectured to follow a power-law distribution. In some cases we find these conjectures to be consistent with the data while in others the power law is ruled out.}, journal = {AMS subject classifications}, author = {Clauset, Aaron and Shalizi, Cosma Rohilla and Newman, M. Many definitions of information, knowledge, and data have been suggested throughout the history of information science. In this article, the objective is to provide definitions that are usable for the physical, biological, and social meanings of the terms, covering the various senses important to our field. Argument. Information 1 is defined as the pattern of organization of matter and energy. Information 2 is defined as some pattern of organization of matter and energy that has been given meaning by a living being. Knowledge is defined as information given meaning and integrated with other contents of understanding. Elaboration. The approach is rooted in an evolutionary framework; that is, modes of information perception, processing, transmission, and storage are seen to have developed as a part of the general evolution of members of the animal kingdom. Brains are expensive for animals to support; consequently, efficient storage, including, particularly, storage at emergent levels-for example, storing the concept of chair, rather than specific memories of all chairs ever seen, is powerful and effective for animals. Conclusion. Thus, rather than being reductionist, the approach taken demonstrates the fundamentally emergent nature of most of what higher animals and human beings, in particular, experience as information.}, language = {en}, number = {4}, urldate = {2015-10-27}, journal = {Information Research}, author = {Bates, Marcia J.}, year = {2005}, note = {ZSCC: 0000393 bibtex*:BatesInformationknowledgeevolutionary2005}, keywords = {Ciência da informação, Conhecimento, dado, informação, ⛔ No DOI found, 🔍No DOI found}, pages = {1 -- 27}, }

Основное внима ние уделено низкочастотной области, где обнаружено аномальное температурное поведение нескольких фононных мод. Высокотемпературными исследованиями выявлено существование четырех фононов с характерным для мягких мод поведением. Эти фононы отнесены к модам, восстанавливающим кубическую симметрию решетки. Экстраполяции их температурных зависимостей позволили выдвинуть гипотезу о существовании цепочки из трех гипотетических высокотемпературных фазовых переходов, аналогичных тем, что наблюдаются собственно в перовските CaTiO3. При температурах ниже 78 K спектр комбинационного рассеяния обогащается новыми линиями, появление которых связано с полярными искажениями ячейки. @article{HAGERSTRAND1968, title = {Innovation diffusion as a spatial process.}, abstract = {The spread of innovations is measured by mapping their distribution at successive periods, a technique with considerable methodological significance for various areas of social science research. Two classes of innovation are analysed: (1) the spread of bovine tuberculosis controls, grazing improvement subsidies and other agricultural innovations, and (2) automobiles, telephones and postal banking services. Throughout, the focus is on the process rather than the materials of diffusion. Private communication is found to be a far more powerful agent of diffusion than public announcement. The most original components of the work are the two types of process models developed. The first is a descriptive and inductive model of the spatial stages of innovation diffusion; the second, a series of Monte Carlo simulation models. In a postscript, A. @article{hopp_matlab_nodate, title = {A {MATLAB} {GUI} for the analysis and reconstruction of signal and image data of a {SAFT}-based {3D} {Ultrasound} {Computer} {Tomograph}}, abstract = {At Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, a new imaging system for early diagnosis of breast cancer is currently developed. The 3D Ultrasound Computer Tomograph (USCT) consists of approximately 2000 ultrasound transducers, which produce 3.5 million A-scans (amplitude scans) summing up to 20 GB of raw data for one image. The large number of A-scans, the large amount of data and the complex relationship between raw data and reconstructed image makes analysis, understanding and further development difficult for the scientists and especially for new employees and students. For this reason, an interactive graphical user interface (GUI) was developed using MATLAB. It integrates existent analysis methods and is easily extendable with new functionality via a plugin concept. The software provides several visualization functions for the raw data, the reconstructed 3D images, the USCT aperture and the relationships between them. This approaches demonstrate that MATLAB is not only applicable as programming language for numerical problems, but also adequate for representing complex systems by a GUI. It has a large benefit for the working group as it is used as common development platform: The plugin concept is widely used to integrate new analysis methods and share them with the rest of the scientists. The GUI and the visualization of the complex relationships of the USCT reduces the training period for new employees and students. An evaluation of the usability shows that the users evaluated the user interface to be very helpful, clearly arranged and beneficial for a better understanding of the coherencies of the USCT system.}, language = {en}, author = {Hopp, Torsten and Schwarzenberg, Gregor F and Zapf, Michael and Ruiter, Nicole V}, note = {00004}, keywords = {⛔ No DOI found}, pages = {11}, }
